Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) assist the ordinary and clergy in distributing Holy Communion to the faithful.
Who may be an EMHC? EMHCs are parishioners who are practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church. They are called to be people of deep faith and believe that the Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
Training is provided by the Archdiocese of Washington's Office of Worship. A secondary, practical training, is also provided at the parish to prepare EMHCs for their roles and responsibilities specific to our parish.
Prior to serving, EMHC will be recognized and received by the parish community at Mass, and the pastor will confer his blessing and commission them to serve in the parish for three years; renewable for an additional three years.
EMHCs are scheduled to serve at least one Sunday Mass per month; weekday Mass if available; and other Masses, such as funerals, weddings and other liturgies, as able.
An extension of this ministry, is visiting and bringing Holy Communion to the homebound, if the priest and deacon are unavailable. If felt called to serve in this capacity, EMHCs may sign up for training with the parish Raphael Ministry.
